Kibana field contains text


If no mapping specification is provided for a given field, and if that field contains any indexable Oracle NoSQL data type — except JSON data — then Oracle NoSQL will use that data type to determine the appropriate type with which to map the field's values to the Elasticsearch type system. For example, if a field of a given table contains values stored as the Oracle NoSQL Database string type, then the default mapping supplied to Elasticsearch will declare that values from that field should be indexed as the Elasticsearch string type.

But if you want Elasticsearch to treat the values of that field as the Elasticsearch integer type, then you would provide a mapping specification for the field including an explicit type declaration; that is. But care must be taken when mapping incompatible data types.

For the example just described, Elasticsearch will encounter errors if any of the string values being indexed contain non-numeric characters. See Elasticsearch Mapping. A mapping specification is necessary for such fields because, as explained later, it is not the document itself that is indexed, but a subset of the document's fields. It does not know the type intended for any of the fields attributes within the document. Thus, for each of the document's fields that will be indexed, the user must provide a corresponding mapping specification that specifies the type that Elasticsearch should use when indexing the field's value.

In addition to specifying the data type of a given field's content, the mapping specification can also be used to further refine how Elasticsearch processes the data being indexed. This is accomplished by including an additional set of parameters in the mapping specification. For example, suppose you want Elasticsearch to apply an analyzer different than the default analyzer when indexing a field with content of type string. In this case, you would specify a mapping specification of the form:.

To see the mapping generated by Oracle NoSQL Database for a given index created in Elasticsearch, you can execute a command like the following from the command line of a host with network connectivity to one of the nodes in the Elasticsearch cluster example: esHost :.

As a concrete example, suppose you have a table named jokeTbl in a store named kvstorewhere the table consists of a field named category with values representing the categories under which jokes can fall, along with a field named txt that contains a string consisting of a joke that falls under the associated category.

Suppose that when indexing the values stored under the category field, you want to index each word that makes up the category; but when indexing each joke, you want the word stems or word roots to be stored rather than the whole words. For example, if a joke contains the word "solipsistic", the stem of the word - "solipsist" — would actually be indexed stored rather than the whole word.

Since the Elasticsearch "standard" analyzer breaks up text into whole words, and the "english" analyzer stems words into their root form, you would use the "standard" analyzer for the category field and the "english" analyzer for the txt field assuming the jokes are written in English rather than some other language.

Once the Text Index is created, you can then query the index by executing a curl command from the command line of a host with network connectivity to one of the nodes in the Elasticsearch cluster. For example. In some scenarios however, and with specific data sets, basic queries will not be enough. While often defined as advanced, they are not difficult to master and often involve using a specific character and understanding the syntax.

In some cases, you might not be sure how a term is spelled or you might be looking for documents containing variants of a specific term. In these cases, wildcards can come in handy because they allow you to catch a wider range of results. Instead, I will use a wildcard query as follows:.

Create Data Index

Since these queries are performed across a large number of terms, they can be extremely slow. Fuzzy queries searches for terms that are within a defined edit distance that you specify in the query. The default edit distance is 2, but an edit distance of 1 should be enough for catching most spelling mistakes. In the same example above, we can use a fuzzy search to catch the spelling mistake made in our production ELB instance.

Again, without using fuzziness, the query below would come up short:. But using an edit distance of 2, we can bridge the gap and get some results:. Whereas fuzzy queries allow us to specify an edit distance for characters in a word, proximity queries allow us to define an edit distance for words appearing in a different order in a specific phrase.

Using a free-text query will most likely come up empty or display a wide range of irrelevant results, and so a proximity search can come in handy in filtering down results:. Boosting in queries allows you to make specific search terms rank higher in importance compared to other terms. The default boost value is 1, where 0 and 1 reduce the importance, or weight, you want to apply to search results.

Fuzzy Searches

You can play around with this value for better results. They can be used, for example, for partial and case-insensitive matching or searching for terms containing special characters. I recommend reading up on the syntax and the allowed characters in the documentation. Elasticsearch uses its own regex flavor that might be a bit different from what you are used to working with.

Keep in mind that queries that include regular expressions can take a mazhabi sikh surnames since they require a relatively large amount of processing by Elasticsearch.

Depending on your query, there may be some effect on performance and so, if possible, try and use a long prefix before the actual regex begins to help narrow down the analyzed data set.

Ranges are extremely useful for numeric fields. While you can search for a specific numeric value using a basic field-level search, usually you will want to look for a range of values.

As always with learning a new language — mastering Kibana advanced searches is a matter of trial and error and exploring the different ways you can slice and dice your data in Kibana with queries. First, the better your logs are structured and parsed, the easier the searching will be. Second, before you start using advanced queries, I also recommend understanding how Elasticsearch indexes data and specifically — analyzers and tokenizers. In many cases, users reviewing those insights should not have access to all the details from the log data. The log data for a web application, for example, might include the source IP addresses of incoming requests. Privacy rules in many countries require that those details be masked, wholly or in part. This post explains how to set up field masking within your Amazon ES domain. Field masking is an alternative to field-level security that lets you anonymize the data in a field rather than remove it altogether.

When creating a role, add a list of fields to mask. Field masking affects whether you can see the contents of a field when you search.
